Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is Tools for Divers?

Tools for Divers builds professional diving tools for iOS. Our apps include Slate, a professional dive logbook, and Dalton, a technical diving gas calculator.

Do I need an account?

No. Neither Slate nor Dalton requires an account, login, or registration. Your data stays on your device. Slate offers optional iCloud sync to keep your logbook in sync across Apple devices.

What languages are supported?

English, Spanish, and French.

Slate

What is Slate?

Slate is a professional dive logbook for iPhone. Log dives manually, import wirelessly from your dive computer, track career stats, and export your data freely.

What dive computers does Slate support?

Slate imports wirelessly over Bluetooth from Shearwater, Suunto, Mares, Oceanic, and other dive computers. It also accepts UDDF file imports from any computer that exports the format.

Is Slate free?

Core logging, dive computer import, search, and export are free with no dive limit or trial period. Pro unlocks career analytics, trends, on-device analysis, and advanced features with a one-time purchase. Not a subscription.

Where is my data stored?

On your device. Slate optionally syncs via iCloud to keep your logbook across Apple devices, but no Tools for Divers server ever stores your dive data.

Can I export my data?

Always. CSV and UDDF export are free and unrestricted. Your data is never locked in.

What is on-device analysis?

Slate uses Apple’s Foundation Models to surface patterns across your dive history. The analysis runs entirely on your phone and requires iPhone 15 Pro or later.

Dalton

What is Dalton?

Dalton is a technical diving gas calculator for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Android. It handles MOD, EAD, END, best mix, gas density, partial pressures, return numbers, and dive profile planning for air, nitrox, and trimix.

What calculations does Dalton support?

Gas Calculations: Operating Limits (MOD/MinOD), Equivalent Depths (EAD/END), Gas Properties (density and partial pressures), and Best Mix (optimal nitrox for target depth).

Dive Planning: Return Number (cave gas rules and turn pressure), Dive Profile Advisor (gas mix recommendations per segment), and Bottom Time (maximum dive time for your gas supply).

How accurate are the calculations?

All calculations are verified against published nitrox and trimix reference tables, dive computer firmware, and established gas physics formulas. Every formula is transparent — tap any result to see the equation, source citation, and assumptions.

Is Dalton free?

Dalton’s four gas calculation tools are completely free. The three dive planning tools (Bottom Time, Return Number, and Dive Profile Advisor) unlock with a one-time Pro purchase. No ads, no subscriptions.

What gas mixes are supported?

Air, nitrox (any O2 percentage), and trimix (any O2/He combination). Common presets are available for quick access.

What is the Dive Profile Advisor?

Enter depth and time segments for a planned dive and Dalton recommends optimal gas mixes for each segment, with safety warnings and a full-screen slate view designed for underwater reference.

What is the Return Number calculator?

It applies standard cave gas rules (thirds, fourths, or sixths) to your starting pressure and team size to calculate your turn pressure. Essential for overhead environment planning.

What is the Bottom Time calculator?

It calculates your maximum dive time based on tank size, fill pressure, SAC rate, planned depth, and gas rule. Includes standard tank presets (AL80, Steel 12L, Steel 15L, doubles) for quick setup.

Is Dalton a dive computer or decompression planner?

No. Dalton is a verification and reference tool. It does not compute decompression obligations or replace proper dive planning software. Always dive within your training limits.

Data Privacy

What data do your apps collect?

All our apps are privacy-focused. Dalton stores only your preferences locally. Slate stores your dive logbook on your device, with optional iCloud sync. Neither app collects, sells, or shares personal data. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.

How can I delete my data?

Delete the app from your device. There are no Tools for Divers server-side accounts or data storage. If you used Slate’s iCloud sync, your data remains in your iCloud account until you remove it from iCloud settings.

Troubleshooting

Units are displaying incorrectly

The app crashes or runs slowly

  1. Close and reopen the app
  2. Restart your device
