About
What Tools for Divers Is
Tools for Divers is a professional software company building purpose-built instruments for scuba divers. Each app in the suite – Slate, Dalton, and more to come – solves a single problem with total precision. The suite spans iOS, Android, and web because serious divers should not have to compromise based on which device they carry.
What We Believe
Software should meet the same standard as hardware. A regulator that gives you a questionable reading at depth is unacceptable. Software that handles your gas calculations or dive records should be held to the same bar. That is why every formula in the suite cites its source and every result can be independently verified against published diving standards. Inspectability is not a feature we ship – it is a design constraint we build around.
One app, one job. It would be easier to build one app that does everything. It would also be worse. A gas calculator that is also a logbook that is also a color correction tool accumulates compromises in every layer. Separate apps mean each tool can be optimized without constraint, updated on its own schedule, and replaced if something better comes along. The suite is the toolkit. Each app is the instrument.
Your data, your device. There is no account system because there is no server collecting your data. There is no cloud dependency because your dive log should not stop working when a startup shuts down. Export is always unrestricted – UDDF, CSV, whatever the standard calls for. This is not a privacy policy. It is an engineering decision.
Verified against published standards. The position is not “trust us.” The position is “verify us.” Gas calculations are cross-referenced against PADI recreational dive planner tables, TDI technical standards, and the gas laws they derive from. When we say a formula is correct, we show the citation. When an agency updates a standard, we update the implementation.
Who Builds It
Tools for Divers is built by Oscar Swanros, a software engineer with over fifteen years of experience shipping professional applications on iOS and Android. Oscar is also an active diver based in Mexico, logging over a hundred dives a year across Caribbean reefs and Yucatan cenotes. Certified in deep diving, nitrox, night diving, cavern diving, and sidemount through SSI and SNSI, and currently training toward Divemaster, he brings both disciplines to the work. Every app gets field-tested before it ships – on a boat, at a dive site, with wet hands and real gas mixes.
Where This Is Going
Tools for Divers is an active, growing product suite – not a finished side project. New instruments are in development across platforms, and the existing apps ship updates regularly. If you have questions, feature requests, or feedback, reach out at contact@toolsfordivers.com.
